Here in the world of reviews, I will review anything and everything. I consider myself a deep thinker. Maybe even too deep. That’s with what I eat, what I watch, everything really. That can be annoying, but it also allows for this page to exist authentically on my website. This isn’t me providing filler. This is me putting my heart and soul into what I think on a variety of topics. Let’s dive into a doozy: The Apple.
I used to be a banana eater. If you’re wondering whether that has an alternative meaning, the answer is no. I literally mean that my fruit of choice from a day to day perspective was the banana. I probably went a decade straight eating a banana a day. One day, I’d had enough. It was time to move on from this mushy fruit. I needed something new. Something fresh. Something with a crunch. I made the move to the apple!
This is what I discovered. There were never ending types of apples! How fun was this?! I spent years trying to figure out which apple was best. Essentially, I did the work for you. Here are a few that apples that, while popular, are NOT the best apples in the world, with proper reasoning of course:
McIntosh
If you were to play Family Feud and have someone name a type of apple, this would be a popular answer. I feel like this is the apple you’d pick off a tree in the fall. It’s honestly one of the worst choices, though. It’s too sour and becomes bruised and mushy way too easily.
Red Delicious
This is, aesthetically, the most beautiful apple. I’m pretty sure this is the apple they use in Snow White, and for good reason. It’s shiny, it’s bright, it’s lovely. I’ve had a few of these where I’ve thought, “this is the best apple ever.” Here’s the problem: I’ve had a few of these where I’ve also thought “this is the worst apple ever.” There’s just no consistency. Sure, you can find them to be sweet and crunchy. But they can also be mushy and bitter.
Granny Smith
There are plenty of Granny Smith fans out there, but I am not one of them. Yes, they have a nice crisp to them, I’ll concede that. They are just too sour. Too tart, if you will. I’m not eating an apple for that. No sir.
Now, here’s the runner-up:
Honeycrisp
This is a fantastic apple. This is like people that think Mario Lemieux is the greatest hockey player ever. I disagree (it has to be Gretzky), but Lemieux deserves his flowers. That’s the same with the honeycrisp apple. Its name is perfect, too. Sweet like honey, with a nice crisp when you bite it. It’s juicy, it’s crunchy, it’s a delight. Compared to number one, though, it does come up slightly short. I’ve seen a few bruised honeycrisps in my day. I’ve had a few not so sweet honeycrisps as well.
And now, without further ado, the best apple in the world:
Gala
This is the apple of all apples. It’s everything and more. Crunchy? Check. Sweetness level? Absolutely perfect (as in not over the top, but certainly not tart). Do they last in the fridge? Seemingly forever! Do they bruise easily? Not. At. All. The consistency puts it over the top. Rarely have I had myself a poor or even so-so gala apple.
So there you have it, folks. The first High Ceiling Sports Review is in the books. Do yourself a favour and go grab yourself a bag of gala apples. You can thank me later.
